TechTarts Tartorial on the Highly Addictive App Foursquare

The tarts are hooked on our new favorite app called Foursquare, a location-based social network that lets you connect with friends using GPS via your mobile device at your favorite places.

This app is so addictive because you can check in at your hot spots and leave tips about what you love, see where your friends are checking in and receive deals from the businesses you check in at or specials nearby. But the best part is the game element that allows you to earn points, badges and become the mayor of your favorite place.

What is a Thumb Drive and Do I Need One?

A thumb drive – no, it is not a device you hook on your steering wheel or a game for X-Box. A thumb drive, often called a USB stick, Flash drive, or removable drive, is that tiny (1 to 2 inch) stick about the size of a thumb that is actually a mini-hard drive (a hard drive is the thing on your computer, device or a separate box that stores your actual files and applications) and can hold anywhere from 4 Gigabytes to 256 Gigabytes of digital information (photos, documents, music, etc). (Gigabytes, GB or Gigs, equal 1 million bytes of digital information storage. You can easily get away with 8 or 12 and be just fine). (more…)

TechTarts Tartorial: How to Download an iPhone or iPod Touch App

TechTarts was conceived one night at my BFF Joanna’s house when her 9-year-old son Ben saw that I had the Whoopie Cushion app installed on my iPhone and wondered why his mum did not have such a fun app, or any app for that matter, installed on hers. Considering she had her iPhone for whole year longer than I had, I asked her as well, ‘yeah, why don’t you have any apps downloaded when you have had your phone for nearly two years’? She answered, ‘I don’t know how to download an app’.

This just seemed crazy to me that someone could have an iPhone for that long with NO APPS! The whole purpose you fork over all that dough re mi for an iPhone with not so great reception is for the APPS! She continued to tell me her intimidation around technology and how there really wasn’t a friendly forum where she could learn all things tech in a way she could understand them. This then instantly became my mission to create a place where she and other women who felt the same could come and learn techie things without all the techie talk and bada boom bada bang, TechTarts was born!

So here is my Ode to Jo Tartorial on how to download an app to your iPhone or iPod Touch as a full circle thank you for being my everlasting muse. To begin, you must have an iTunes account set up on your computer or through your iPhone or iPod Touch.

<<<1. Click on the App Store app on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

>>>2. Choose an app in the App Store to download by scrolling through one of the following app finder selection options Featured, Categories, Top 25, or Search at the bottom of the App Store page (our example shows the ‘Search’ option).

<<<3. Tap on the app that you would like to download, for this example the tarts are using the Chomp app. An Info page about the app will appear with the app name, ratings, features of the app, and screen shots of what the app looks like along with a blue box at the top right that either says ‘FREE’ or the price for the app.

>>>4. To download the app tap the blue box that says ‘FREE’ or a price and it will turn green and now say ‘INSTALL’. Tap the green ‘INSTALL’ box.

<<<5. An iTunes Password box will appear. Enter your iTunes Password and then tap ‘OK’.

>>>6. The app will then begin installing on your iPhone or iPod Touch. And ta-dah, you have an new app to play with!

xoxo
